How do towing companies charge for towing? is it by mile, service, or something else? also, whats the cheapest price for towing about 5.3 miles? and, is it illegal to tow your own car with a truck in the state of wisconsin? if towing from a company is too expensive, i might have to tow my dead car to a shop with my dad's truck. i was just wondering if this was legal and how to go about it.

Where I'm at.. it's usually a set fee for x amount of miles... usually $40 in our town $50 out to 15 miles and I forgot what it is per mile after that....

Depending upon the state and what has to be towed, some are regulated to what they can charge period, whereas we are only regulated if it's a tow job that the police calls us out on

and as most said, pulling a vehicle is very much illegal but usually unless the cops catch you doing it, not much is said.... It's cheaper just to call around and see who's the cheapest to tow the car, but you are probably looking at about $50

It is illegal in any state to do the pull by rope scheme. But folks bring 'em in like that all the time if it is 5 miles on a lightly traveled road do it. In Missouri the rates would run you about 75 bucks...

Call the shop you want to use. they may have a tow service they use and can add it to your bill or if they have their own truck, do it for less..

I do...If they get the work done here I eat the cost or at least what it cost to make the trip..Call them it can't hurt....
