Of course breaking the law is a bad thing. The question is how bad. There are lots of laws against different acts and some are worse than others. If an illegal alien steals, robs or murders while they're uninvited guests in this country than lock them up and throw away the key or better yet kick their *** out. If an undocumented worker follows all the laws except for filling out a bunch of paperwork, make them pay a fine and/or send them back and make them apply properly but don't put them all in the same class as drugdealers and terrorists. I will say this, whether one feels that illegal immigrants are right or wrong in breaking the law one should understand why they do it. Economic desperation. A wish to feed their families and clothe their children. A desire to make a better life for themselves. Does that mean they should just be allowed to come over here willy nilly? Certainly not! Our economy could not absorb all the people who would want to come over here if we just opened up our borders.
Unfortunately, part of the problem is our own creation. As much as some people in this country think NAFTA has hurt us, there are many others south of the border who feel it has hurt them. Mexican farmers and others from poor rural areas were devastated by the sudden competition with US Agribusiness and make up a large segment of the illegal immigrant wave. Then there is the quota system that favors white immigrants from Europe over our brown-skinned neighbors to our immediate south or grants asylum to virtually any Cuban that manages to wash up on our shores just because of our longstanding feud with Castro even though they're just as much economic migrants as any Mexican. For a mexican to go through legal channels to get a visa to come to the US is like winning the lottery.
To be fair, the government of Mexico itself is largely responsible. If they privatized the incredibly corrupt and inefficient Pemex oil company, a lot of the economic mess in Mexico would be alleviated. The government also has an incentive to turn a blind eye towards illegal immigration since the Mexican economy benefits so greatly from funds sent back to Mexico by illegal immigrants. You'll noticed that they've taken more action on securing their own southern border to prevent migrants from OTHER central american countries from coming through Mexico to cross over their northern border with the US.
But, all this aside, if you really want to know who I think are bad lawbreaking criminals it would be all the US companies that employ undocumented workers all so they can make more money and not have to pay the sort of wages they would to attract the many unemployed americans to do that sort of work. Its really only a half-truth that illegals do the work that americans don't want to do. They do work that many americans would do only not for the wages employers want to pay. We'd be paying social welfare benefits for those americans anyway, but when employers fail to provide health care and other benefits to their illegal employees that unfairly passes a burden on to the state and local governments to have to pick up that tab. Illegal immigration and the failure of the government to act on it is one of the biggest forms of corporate welfare that exists today in this country.
