The reason I ask is I was reading an article in BBC News where an American living in London said she had run across a man who saked if she was american and when she said yes he told her he thought Americans were the poorest people in the world. Also the article said that Americans living in London were treated worse than the immigrants. Frankly I do not consider a WASP American in England an immigrate, just as an Italian-American moving to Italy would not be an immigrant. What does anyone think about this?

People in UK don't hate Americans.
Americans can be very loud and brash by nature, were as the British are quiet and conservative, I think it would be fair to say they think to themselves 'Bloody Yanks' but no hatred.
A lot of this stems from World War 2, the American GI's were better paid than the British Soldier, the uniform looked better and they had access to rationed supplies like candy, nylons and cigarettes, thus they got the girls! My Grand father said the quote was about Yanks ' Over paid, Over sexed , Over here' lol So there was some rivalry.
If you are born in the USA and come to the UK to work you are an immigrant, even if you speak English, perhaps this arrogance is what the British don't like in Americans, bottom line is you are a foreginer working in our country, dosen't matter if your Great Great Great Grandfather was English, your not.

Fear or Favor is not being arrogant. Hear me out on this one. Each culture is unique precisely because of differences, and moments in history that mean little to nothing for others. In America in general, poeple from other countries who naturalize can often become full citizens not only legally, but also in the eyes and hearts of their fellow citizens. However in some places in America you can be born and raised in the next town over and still be considered an "outsider" for your entire life (trust me I lived in these places!) if you move there!
What fear or Favor is trying to get across is that citizenship alone does not make you welcome. America is turning that way towards some groups here. He is saying that there was traditionally anti-American resentment for a series of cross-cultural incidents, real or imagined. Think hard. What started America's current hatred (and I do mean HATRED!) of Hispanic immigrants? Can you trace it back to one source? Are the reasons all valid? Do we need reasons to dislike?
Many other cultures like Americans but find America's culture rude, loud, aggressive, and tiresome. That is not an insult- it is rather an observation. We are overpowering to others when we travel abroad. I have quietly watched this many times in my own travels. Some countries are in awe of us, some hate us, many love our culture, and some find us obnoxious at times and amusing at others. Within the generalizations are individual reactions, as well.
Your citizenship is partly where you were born, but also partly where you feel welcomed. Many Americans I know do not feel at home in their own country. It is a matter of perspective.

I think there's a spirit of anti-Americanism in most of Europe at the moment, because of the war, but it's the minority of people, not the majority. Why do you think we treat East Indian immigrants poorly? I haven't heard of a particular problem.
