Ive heard that tow truck drivers do sometimes outright steal cars. A friend had it happen to him.I would report it stolen first. When your doing that they can possible give you the numbers of tow lots where you can check also.

Start by contacting whoever ordered the car to be towed in the first place. Most likely it was a police department or the owner of the property where the car was illegally parked and DEMAND from them the (NAME,ADDRESS AND PHONE NUMBER) of whoever towed it.If they don't have it then contact the police in the city where the towing company is located and file a stolen vehicle complaint against the towing company.

First thing you need to do is get the police to polygraph everyone who works at the repair shop. 7 times out of 10 the culprit is an employee in the shop who wants the car or the engine. If you haven't reported it stolen you better do it now. You don't want someone getting away with stealing your car. Plus, if you have it insured, the insurance company won't pay without a police report. If the shop doesn't want you to report it, then I would be even more suspicious of them.
