Q. What's the difference between the Democrat and Republican parties?
Q. Do they represent your interests and values?

Democrats talk about the different policies, positions, and priorities we'd see from a Democrat in the White House versus a Republican.

Most Democrat and Republican politicians - including Clinton, Gore, Kerry and Bush - hold similar positions on major issues - and that's why we need a real choice at the polls: a party that gives power to "We the People" instead of powerful corporations.

If you look at where the candidates and parties stand on the issues you can see that the Democrat and Republican parties are in basic agreement on most issues OR they agree to ignore important issues. click the link it will help

They are the same best I can tell .One side is why over there and the other side is way over there. Just extreme left and right. Both are bad.

Did you notice the new way they are doing the polls? lol funny as hell to me. They are not going by what the public likes it is how much we don't like one party verses the other.

I believe Cinner has it backwards. .Rep are for the rich and like big government and the dems are on the other side. She is confused. Dems are for the poor and the rep are for taxing the poor heavy because they say if you tax the rich the rich will just add it to the prices and the poor will pay it anyway. Seems like we could fix that problem pretty easy but it too hard for them to figure out.

i would say the very general explanation would be that the democrats see that en masse social programs are more efficiently handled by the gov't - the same theory that applies to saving money buying at a sam's club for instance - buying in bulk, or buying anything in bulk doesn't allow for as much individuality or options but it does save money for the basic necessities, which the democrats believe generally include 'amenities' like healthcare, standardized school systems, keeping the roads paved etc.

generally the republicans believe basically that taxes should be cut to allow the free market system to allow private businesses to handle these same 'amenities'

the argument is corruption on both sides - repubs generally bemoan "government waste" while dems bemoan "corporate corruption"

I'm a democrat but I'm trying to give you an unbiased answer.

Fundamentally, it has meant more goverment controll of American policies, social and economic issues by the Democrats and less government control and intervention by the Republicans. It seems that over time however, this has changed a bit, and though they both still claim to have these mor and less government platforms, they are actually more and more alike. This makes it difficult to chosses one over the other, and tends to have the American public polarized on single issue where they differ, like abortion, the death penalty or welfare reform.

Democrats tend to be much more socially liberal than Republicans. Republicans tend to favor less regulation of the economy (this depends on the specific form of regulation, but for the most part this holds). Democrats, as a party, tend to be pro-choice, Republicans pro-life. Democrats tend to favor social policy at the federal lever, Republicans at the state level (again depends on the issue).

Probably not much, per se, but here's the 'ideal' definitions:

Republicans tend to be a conservative lot. They pander to the Religious Right, are friends of Big Business and the Military, pro life, limited government (except for neocons), support greater police powers, prefer to downsize welfare.

Democrats tend to be more liberal. They pander to leftist elites (college teachers & professors, activists, etc.) and are friends to the 'liberal media' and Hollywood, greater government involvement in public affairs, worship civil liberties, encourage social program spending.

Hope that helps!

At this point not a whole hell of a lot and don't believe anyone that you otherwise. Seems lately it's 2 card monty with just window dressing between them.

Traditionally though the democrats were for strong economic control and week social control, and the republicans were for week economic control and strong social control. That's talking generality's though,

Was that the Democtrats would tax you and then put everyone on welfare or that the government would pay for everything and the rich could not keep much of what they made. The Republicans said that the people who made the money should be able to spend it on what they wanted.
However not sure about them anymore. either side that is.

Brief explanation: democrats see most issues in shades of gray, they are "progressives", they like to tax people (esp. the rich), and make governmet as large and intrusive as possible. Republicans tend to see issues either as black or white, they are "traditionalists", they like to lower taxes for everyone (yes even the rich), and make government smaller and less intrusive. One more difference: republicans believe in personal responsibilty, whereas deomcrats tend to support blaming others.

The origins of the words are different: democrat is greek, republican is latin. They mean more or less the same. So at least spell them correctly.
