Windsheild safety glass is two plates of glass lamenated together with plastic -- this allows the glass to 'give' if your head hits it in a collision without breaking your neck; tempered glass, usually found in door and back glass, is designed to shatter into thousands of very small pieces to help prevent lacerations. Tempered glass is very strong as opposed to lamenate glass and is used in doors because it resists breaking when the door is shut (20,000 times).

Ellis D had the right answer about safety glass. Whihc is usually only found in car windshields. The glass that only breaks into tiny pieces is actually tempered glass which is used in all kinds of areas that regular glass is used.

I've had both types and based on my experiences with them, glass is more durable than plastic. It doesn't scratch as easily and is less likely to smudge when you're cleaning it. However, it is considerably heavier than plastic which could be very uncomfortable if you wear a strong prescription since your glasses will feel heavy and constantly slide down your nose. If you wear a mild prescription, glass would be a better choice since it doesn't get scratched or scuffed up nearly as much. Even when treated with scratch resistant materials, plastic lenses still get scratched more easily than glass. As for safety concerns, I wore glass lenses for years. I never had problems with breaking them. If anything, the frames were more likely to break than the lenses. Aside from changing prescriptions, that was the most common reason I had to replace my glasses. Another thing I'd like to mention was that in the past before high index came along, another reason I would choose glass was because the lenses were thinner than plastic.

Example...if you were to put super-strong tape onto both sides of a piece of glass, then broke it, it'd still break, but the tape on both sides would hold it together. That's like safety glass (windshields, for instance).
But now, do the same thing w/ a piece of glass without any tape and break it. That's like regular glass.

Safety glass has a semi-viscous liquid plastic sandwiched in between two sheets of tempered glass, and a clear poly layer on the inside of the glass so when you crash your windshield doesn't cut you into cole-slaw.

Safety glass is harder to break and it is not supposed to cut you when it does break.
