Why no address them as mam or something like that.I know they are in the federation and by the romulins (excuse my spelling) I don't know about other races. So my question to all trekkies is why are they called "sir"

They use Sir in the military nowadays to address female officers. It is to eliminate any discrimination ie a female officer has as much worth and rank as a male officer

I agree with "Dude".

There should be no discerntion between male and female. Since no widely recognized English word for respect (both male and female), the traditional military name is used.
