basically there is no fighting because we both hold our anger inside and things don't get resolved or discussed.

i think we both feel hopeless and helpless.

we did go for counseling several years ago but that didn't help. we had other issues then.

Try counseling - individually as well as marriage.

Try Dianetics. There is a how-to DVD and there is the book: Dianetics, the Modern Science of Mental Health. The book can give answers as to why the partners act as they do. Surprising answers. (Surprised me).
(By the way, the word "Dianetics" literally means: through the mind.)
