I was around before home computers and ipods, e-mail and web cams, colour TV and VCR's, DVD's and CD's, microwave ovens and those fast drills they use at dentists these days. I was around before pocket calculators, satellite TV, sat nav, the star wars defence initiative, the first moon landing and widespread electric lighting. I can remember being gobsmacked the first time I ever put my hand under a proper tap and felt hot running water instead of cold, and I can remember when people kept the bath in the garden until they needed it, then dragged it in and set it in front of a fire. I remember a time in borstal when they really did put you in solitary confinement nekkid as the day you were born, and you got nothing but bread and water for up to 60 days at a time, and when you stunk too much they simply blasted you with the cold 'oze. I remember a time before we had to wear seat belts in cars and when you got yer chips wrapped in yesterdays newspaper, and the ink actually tasted good on a cold night and you were hungry. I remember meeting the thalidomide kids, and running round with kids who had the rickets and polio, and the clubfoots, and never needing to be told to cut them some slack because it wasn't politically correct to call them names. See, I remember a time before PC when treating everybody according to their stamp came naturally, and the bigots never got to tell us what we should and shouldn't be doing. And I remember meeting my first real live Indian - one of the kids belonging to those kicked out of Uganda by Idi Amin - until then I'd never seen anybody such a pale shade of brown or heard anybody speak the way they did. I remember a time when we could fight with boys who were different colours to us without it being any more racist than if we fought with boys the same colour as ourselves - and we were all the better for it because until they sterted forcing it, it fit perfectly anyway.

Pretty old, eh?
