Why do we need one ?
what does he do that congress cannot do ?
isn't the fact that we have a president somewhat contradictory to democracy as it leaves one man to decide how to lead the nation ?

A little look at history can answer your question. Initially this new nation did not have a President, under the Articles of Confederation. Without a single executive, as one statesmen put it, we can not deal with a nation that has 13 heads. At the time, there were 13 states. If this nation had 50 heads, as would be the case without an executive branch, that is to say, if leadership were spread over 50 executives then we'd have an even greater sense of confusion. No matter what the case, one bad leader is better than 50 good ones. Our Founding Fathers found this out and reformed our nation under our current Constitution which provides for a strong federal government lead by an executive with vested powers of the President, and shared powers with Congress and the Court.

The short answer is, we tried it without a President, and it didn't work. This format of government has been successful for over 200 years, proving the worth of having a President, even a bad one.

Edit: The second part of your question deals with why the President gets to make choices that 'most' of the country disagrees with. Remember that, under our Constitution, the President has limited powers. He may only make some decisions without a majority in Congress. One recent example is the Veto of HR810, which would have removed restrictions on Federal money for Stem Cell research. Most Americans were against this veto. However, having been elected into office, the President, under our Constitution, has the power to Veto regardless of how Americans feel. Congress can override his Veto, with a 2/3 vote. In the case of HR810, Congress lacked the necessary votes to override the Veto. The only recourse allowed Americans, under our current Constitution is to remember with our votes in 2008.

Well, this one...I have no idea. We don't need him at all.
But a good, intelligent president can do wonders to help the nation. Keep a one sided senate balanced, the congress in line, & actually stop wars & keep the economy strong.
Clinton made lots of mistakes, & was a snake himself, but we had a great economy! Wish he was back again, although the interns will all run away...I hope!
