"Anxiety is a complex combination of emotions that includes fear, apprehension and worry, and is often accompanied by physical sensations such as palpitations, nausea, chest pain and/or shortness of breath." says the Wikipedia
Anxiety is a state in which your body is wound up with the sympathetic nervous system fight/flight/fright response. This may be as a result of a stressor (like if you see a spider), or in some cases it may be a periodic condition without a stressor (like a panic attack) or can be a general pervasive condition that someone stays in all the time (generalized anxiety disorder).
Anxiety in its origin is functional. If you are about to take a test or if the caveman sees the sabre-toothed tiger or if I have to go and deal with a psychiatric patient, the body kicks in this response. Your heart beats fast and blood is diverted away from the skin and from the stomach. It goes primarily to the brain and muscles so you are able to run or fight or whatever (run away from the psych patient hehehe)
Consequently patients with anxiety feel odd sensations in their skin, their heart pounding away and chest pains, short of breath, butterflies in their stomach ... etc.
