I may be moving to Texas in 11-12 months, for two reasons: 1. I LOVE Texas! 2. I HATE where I live, Kentucky (Louisville-Lexington-Frankfort metro area.) I may be participating in a domestic exchange program at universities in one of three cities: 1. College Station (near Houston), 2. San Marcos (near Austin and San Antonio), and 3. Denton (near Dallas and Fort Worth.)

For a college kid in a small town in Kentucky, which do you think would be the best fit for me. I'm not an active contributor and spectator of the arts, but I do like to have access to it. I'm not a huge shopper, but want to be close to city amenities. I'm used to living in the suburbs and not inner-city, so I want something likewise (except, of course, Texas' small-town friendliness is unmatched, in my experience.)

Which of these areas do you suggest? Should I live in these towns, or commute to school there from one of the nearby larger cities? Thanks!

Texas has something that Kentucky can't match: The friendliest, most charitable people I've ever met.

Congratulations, Texas people/food rocks.

1. College Station- NOT near Houston, at least two hours away. But Texas A&M is an entire city onto itself. The school is heavily funded, fun, very proud, very Texan and steeped in tradition.
2. San Marcos- At one time, it was considered the quintessential 'party school'- still is to a slightly lesser degree. Recreation is around every corner, from the crystal clear swimming river that runs throught the middle of the town from nearby springs (picture swimming in cold, clear water on hot TX days and lots of bikinis and schoolbooks) to the nearby Guadalupe river which is very famous for beer and tubeing.
3. Denton- Not a big fan of Dallas area. People tend to be a little less 'earthy' than the rest of the state. I'm not a fan of snootiness.

Combine this info with the other answers are sure to follow and you should get a pretty good picture.
Good luck!

San Marcos is nice but so is the College Station area? Will you be attending Texas A&M? College Station is a big college town. In the Spring College Station has the most beautiful bluebonnets. Want to know something wierd. I'm from Paducah, Kentucky.

If I had those three choices, I'd go with San Marcos. Denton is too close to Dallas, and the Dallas area does *not* exhibit that small-town friendliness you mention.
