This week marked the one year anniversary of Hurricane Katrina, which means it’s time for white Americans to look into the mirror and ask themselves what they have done to make life easier for the millions of impoverished Blacks they allowed to drown in New Orleans. The answer is, to put it bluntly, diddly squat.

Large crowds of local politicians stand around wondering what Bush is going to do about it.

Parts of the Gulf of Mexico are still completely underwater.

Thousands who fled Louisiana haven't been offered enough cash incentives to come back.

We can never completely repay African-Americans for what we did to them in New Orleans. But there are meaningless little gestures we can make to show the Black community that we at least care enough to pretend like we give damn about their suffering. Naming a street in your community after Dr. Martin Luther King. Treat them like helpless children who need constant nurturing to survive

What would you like Bush to do? Give Billions (Trillions?) of Tax payer dollars to help "African-Americans" rebuild a port city that was BELOW sea level.

We, Bush, the government owes nothing to a city with a huge populus that can not move out of harms way when the warning was given 2 weeks in advance that a major hurricane was coming.

Did you know that OTHER minorities live in New Orleans? That New Orleans IS NOT a Chocolate city?

I suppose the suffering of others should always be undervalued when something happens to the black community. Please forget the latinos, asians, and of course... forget whitey.

Did you think Bush would have done something different if white people occupied the city? Or do you think that the same thing would have happened? People should NEVER expect their government to hold their hand through a matter that was so bluntly pronounced ahead of time. Everyone had a chance to get the hell out of the way.

Maybe when the "helpless children" start living in a costal city that isn't below sea-level, maybe when govenor's and mayor's investigate their water pumps that can only handle category 3 hurricanes... then maybe the black community can be "repaid". Because we all know ... that America is still indebt to them.

I agree that much still has to be done to repair the damage caused by Katrina, both in terms of physical damage, and the psychological damage caused by our governments abandonment of an entire group of people because of their class and ethnicity. I understand your cynicism, and even feel it to some extent myself. I don't think that sarcasm is the right way to express our outrage--it doesn't do anything to solve the immediate problem. I think many white Americans, myself included, have stepped up to help those disenfranchised after the storm. Should we be doing more? Absolutely, but now with all of the information we've been hearing lately about how funds are not getting to those who are most in need, and the inability of all levels of government to make any great effort in the rehabilitation and rebuilding of New Orleans and the Gulf coast, I have been reluctant to donate my funds because I have no way of knowing if those funds and going to line some politicians pocket or actually go to help somone in need. I suspect that many other may feel the same. I don't think politicians are standing around any longer wondering what GW is going to do, because they've seen what he hasn't done, and know that he won't be doing much more in the future other than his infamous photo ops. Yeah, he's good at those. Hopefully, in a couple of months we'll have a change in Washington, and people who really are patriots and have true respect of all of the people in this great country will put a task force together to figure out the reasons why the Bush regime failed so dismally, and hold those accountable responsible. Then they can work honestly and judiciously to formulate a plan to rebuild New Orleans and the Gulf, to restore the wetlands, build a levee system that rivals any in the world, and help the displaced citizens rebuild their homes and lives.

Katrina became the 11th tropical hurricane, 5th hurricane, 0.33 significant hurricane, and 2nd class 5 hurricane of the 2005 Atlantic season. It formed over the Bahamas on August 23, 2005, and crossed southern Florida as a reasonable class a million hurricane, inflicting some deaths and flooding there, in the previous strengthening promptly contained in the Gulf of Mexico and turning out to be between the main useful hurricanes on checklist jointly as at sea. Ooops!

Are you for real? Whites aren't to blame for any of this. How may of the people in New Orleans just sat there when the Weather Channel, News Casters, and Emergency Officials told them that New Orleans is BELOW sea level, a HURRICAN is coming towards you, EVACUATE!!!! How many looked at the bus drivers that came to help evacuate them and said " We gonna wait on the GOOD busses?" They actually said this, it's recorded. I'm not saying I don't feel bad for what happened, but the African-American community needs to start opening their eyes and get off their a**' and do something for themselves. I live in Florida, when we are hit by a hurricane we help one another. Enemies become neighbors in a time of need and help each other. Why not blame the New Orleans Officials? They are more responsible, Inadequate levees, Inadequate evacuation plans...... Why the heck should anyone be offered Cash Incentives to go back? Who's suppose to pay the money?

Oh, and ALL of the Gulf Of Mexico will ALWAYS be underwater. IT'S THE GULF (a large Body of water).

Why not Black Americans look back with open eyes and ask why do we need to just sit with the hurricane coming and expect whites to come in and escort us to safety, we are capable of helping ourselves. Whites DID NOT do anything to African-Americans in New Orleans. I sat in Florida watching all the TV reports, people tried to get them to leave, THEY WOULDN'T.

IT'S TIME TO REPLAY SOME OF THE TV FOOTAGE OF REPORTS TRYING TO GET THE PEOPLE IN NEW ORLEANS TO EVACUATE, AND THEM REFUSING, AND TO STOP BLAMING WHITES FOR NOT MAKING THEM. PEOPLE (black and white) TRIED TO GET THEM TO LEAVE, TO GO TO SAFETY, THEY REFUSED.

People need to get a reality check. Now the elderly and the disabled, should have been forceably removed, but thats ILLEGAL, you cannot forceably make someone evacuate.

Obviously, yes, a lot of Americans have forgotten that the people in New Orleans were told to evacuate and stayed anyway. And a lot will always remember, watching, wondering why them stupid people wouldn't leave. Yeah thats the thought going through peoples heads that know what a hurricane can do, when people are warned to EVACUATE NEW ORLEANS, IT'S BELOW SEA LEVEL AND A HURRICANE IS HEADED TO YOU. and they refuse. they just sit there.

The Weather Channel and CNN and other channels had almost constant coverage.

Obviously you are right, "they should be treated like helpless children who need constant nurturing to survive"

I patially agree with Leogirl0804, there have been more natrual diasters going on other than Katrina,

Also, your argument is only half desent, so my answer will be too. First off, stop Blaming white people ok! African Americans weren't the only one's that died there, and stop making white people the enmy. I hate how everytime something goes bad, you just go straight to making racist comment and accuse everyone is against you just because of your race, it's pathetic

Also, Katrina didn't target just African Americans, it targeted a vast amount of mixed communities, White people died to, and some hispanics, and atleast some of any race died in that region, not just african americans, So stop whining like you were the only one that suffered...

And if you are so concerned about how African American Katrina victims are treated, then get your lazy butt up and do something about it instead of sitting around on the computer whining all day!

You sure have got a dent in your head.

1. Millions drowned?
2. Billions have already been given to NO.
3. Nagin and the lady governor are the only ones crying & whining-Alabama & Mississippi just rolled up their sleeves and have repaired things.
4. If they did offer cash incentives, dude, any ideas where they would live, have electricity, water and sewer?
5. Ask the Democraps-they created this welfare state 50 years ago.
6. Ask the NO politicians where all the millions of dollars given to them to have the levees fixed for the past 40 years.

Yes it's a tragedy. I'm so tired of you crying liberals.

Parts of the Gulf of Mexico are still completely under water? No shyt, Sherlock, it's a fvcking ocean.

Cash incentives? WTF?! Why do people from Louisiana feel they should be paid to go back and repair their own homes & businesses? Florida's damaged areas were up & running within a year after Hurricane Andrew, and most of the damage was repaired by the local citizens who had to balls to do the job themselves.

People from Louisiana and New Orleans especially seem to think they deserve to have the federal government (read: the rest of the USA) fix their shyt for them. Wake up, people. Those people chose to live there, most of the dead ("millions"? HAH! Lying sack of shyt) died because they were too stubborn or too ignorant or too busy stealing everything that wasn't tied down to leave. Fvck the "African-Americans", they did it to themselves, so they can fix it themselves and shut the fvck up. Your pity party is OVER.

I have had enough. This is a free country. Anybody reguardless of race or religion can move out of it if they do not like it. As for the hurricane victims....... What do you expect to happen when you live in an area known for hurricanes? I understand that there were some people who couln't get out because of health reasons or lack of transportation. However, when is this country going to start taking responsibility for thier own choices. Many CHOSE to stay. They had warnings days in advance. Were told to get out; but didn't. Many parts of our country come with certain mother nature risks. Some areas are prone to flooding, others earthquakes, then there's the hurricane areas. I personally live in an area known for tornadoes. If a tornado hits my house and wipes it out you can bet you life savings that the US government is NOT going to give me money to help buy the basics or pay for a place for me to live in for months. Why is it the governments responsibility to do so in this mother nature tragedy and Not other tragedies caused by mother nature? Why do so many people seem to think it is the governments responsibility? Why has this become an issue about white and black? Hello!!!!!! There were white people there too!
I am tired of everyone wanting the government to give them hand outs. Our government has enough problems with corruption. It may or may not be the best system; but I choose to live here. Everyone of you knows our government is slowly deterriorating especially with protecting the rights of criminals. What do you really expect?

Let me explain it this way -- as a Florida resident, and one whose area was DIRECTLY HIT by TWO Major Hurricanes since 2004 (and also directly hit by other tropical storms and outer bands of other Hurricanes) -- and whose area is STILL Rebuilding (and it is NOT the New Orleans Area -- which is a very small portion of those who SURVIVED Hurricanes) -- why all the attention on this very small portion -- when those that ACTUALLY were Affected Directly by DIRECT HITS from Major Hurricanes (and New Orleans was NOT hit directly -- it was Mississippi and Alabama that took the BRUNT of Katrina's Force) --

WHY don't you care about all those residents of Mississippi, Alabama, Florida, and those in Louisiana OUTSIDE of New Orleans????

Even Dr. King would tell you to cut the victim crap already. As a African American I find your blame Whitey BS to be a Crutch. The many people were affected by Katrina. In fact MS & AL were harder hit. The folks who need to look in the mirror are the people of ATLANTIS. Or is stll Chocolate City?
