I think the basic principles of most religions and said god are a good idea, it teaches people the basic laws to life i.e thou shall not kill , thou shall respect thy neighbour etc.... it bought famillies and neighbourhoods together! perhaps if it was still as strong today as it was 500yrs ago or more we would have the word asbo!
I am an athiest but i have like so many of us out there a good moral grounding of what is right and wrong and thats what religion is to me the handbook of what is right and wrong! saying that you look at how many case's u see in the paper of people in power abusing thee rights thruout history! so the priciple is a good idea but as soon as man gets hold of it, it goes wrong! the church smuggled alcohol in the prohibition days! they abused boys and so forth. Again if we look at relgion in todays society and in previous times it is alays misinterpreted, look at the jewish v muslim v christian they where all well interlinked.
If we take a step back a few thousand years back into times b4 christ and you will find in iraq there is a circle of faith which has most of the main religions around it all interlinking! the great daruish from the perisan empire tollerated and freed thousands of jews so that they could go back to there home land they seemes to be more tollerent.
I may of got some of the history wrong above but you get the genreal jist!
PEACE LOVE N UNITY! FORGET WAR, LOOK AFTER WHAT WE HAVE AROUND US NOW! SMILE AT A STRANGER AND TRY NOT TO BE RACIST!

How could we be truly happy just living to die - what would be the point of our lives then? We do need reasons but I also firmly believe in God so although I am not always happy living my life (bad things happen to everyone) I know this is just part of a longer journey/learning experience. Quite exciting waiting for the last chapter eh?

Humans need something to explain the unknown. It doesn't have to be a single supreme being, and in fact in the history of mankind that's a relatively recent invention.

Humans did invent him so yes. People cannot handle the truth ever. No matter how much proof you supply for anything, humans will doubt it and make up a far less plausible explanation.

if we ever conquered space before we blew ourselves up and found an alien life form, the first thing we would do would be to give them the concept of god and religion.that way we could enslave them with empty promises of a better life in the herafter while exploiting their a*ss*s in the present;JUST LIKE WE DO ON THIS INSIGNIFICANT LITTLE PLANET.doesn't LOL.

The idea of God always existed. whether God exists or not is irrelevant.

Yes, people like to think they always will be around in one form or another. Believing is god and heaven, etc. helps people deal with death.

well it is natural for humans to be afraid of death- and therfore, knowing that they will eventually die, believing in a god and a heaven allows them to think they will have everlasting life.
