I'd rather give that money to a starving child or a family on hard times...

The point is... why are we wasting our intellect on issues 'out in space' rather than on issues here before our very eyes... As a hobby, its fine, but I wouldn't want to be sinking money into a person who's talking about planets we'll never experience in our lifetimes over sinking money in an issue we face every day of our lives...

Pluto is not and should never have been characterized as a planet. It is a kuiper belt object. In fact many moons in our solar system are larger than Pluto, including our own. It also does not lie along the plane of the ecliptic (its tilted at 17 degrees - far more than any other planet) and its orbit is highly elliptical, much moreso than any other planet. In fact Pluto's orbit is so elliptical that for a period of time during its rotation it is closer to the Sun than Neptune.

I agree with you. I would rather take that money and make more schools, hire more teachers, fix hospitals better, and all the major airports (hell, ALL of the airports) so that each one of them have enough security. The bigger the airport, the more security and equipment we need so that we do not have another unfortunate travesty on our hands and more innocent people dying. Fix New Orleans! Have the mayor and the Governor of Louisiana go into the media and have all the people who lived in New Orleans to go and camp out of their property and then, with Habitat for Humanity their to help rebuild. I mean, there are so many things to do with that money and we are wasting it on Pluto and on going to the moon. We went there already!

No. Most of the people involved in the international astronomical groups are not on government payroll, at least not for things like this.

And most people missed what the actual debate was about, which is "what is the definition of a planet". Because there are several bodies in the solar system larger than Pluto, so the current definition (which included Pluto but excluded them) was causing problems with other analysis and categorizations.

For more perspective on the actual debate and its relevance, see below.
