No one has a right to tell anyone else how to live if they are not breaking the law. And people should stay out of other people's families. Politicians do in a sense through legislation based on what their constituents tell them they want.
Some of them use religion too much to decide. While I do agree that religion gives a base of right and wrong, we must never forget that we have separation of religion and state for a purpose... in order to not oppress those who may differ from our beliefs.
That is exactly why this country is great: because by separating religion and state has allowed us to progress and slowly change errors in the original formation of our government... like when it used to be the law that blacks were not even considered citizens because the forefathers declared them as not human beings but property.
Some ppl argue that things they find immoral or dont agree with influence their children.. sorry but too bad.. that is life in a free country. If you don't like it then move to a dictatorship or put your child in religious school. BUT don't try to tell another family how to raise their kids because THEIR kids also get influenced by people's kids who teach the opposite of what they believe.
As long as all families are tax-paying citizens and obey the laws they have every right to live the way they want to and teach their children their beliefs. I have no clue why some people think it is ok and impose their beliefs on other people just because they don't agree with them.

Politicians make laws for us (on our behalf) this is what is meant by Representative democracy.
The Judicial branch decide when laws ( Right and Wrong) have been broken.
If however you meant right and wrong in the moral sense...yes many of our laws are based on the Judaic/Christian values.

Their values, or lack of them, determine what we have to put up with...
America is supposed to represent the majority, and also respect the minority....
But If the majority doesn't approve of something, the minority should not make everyone else miserible.
here is an example
Everybody likes red, but one guy likes blue, I guess we all have to like blue now.... whether we want to or not.
THis is screwed up, but that's what happens when you have the minority constituting their values above ours...
