I think that conservatism (at least, in the meaning used in Europe) is just one of the branches of liberalism (in the meaning used in Europe), which extended very much because of the great popularity of its ideas among different social groups, but it still remains one of its branches, exactly as neoliberalism, social liberalism or minarchism do.Eventually, we shouldn't forget that Edmund Burke, the father of conservatism, was not a whig...

If you are trying to say that conversatism evolved out of liberalism, you have it backwards. Well at least here in the states.

FDR is the father of liberalism in the USA. That liberalism evolved out of stringent conservatism that led us into the Great Depression. FDR recognized that we needed social programs (the New Deal) that protected the working class in order to prevent us from becoming a third world country... he was trying to counter that stict conservatism.

What we are seeing today seems to be a battle between those of us who recognize that this liberalism has prevented us from becoming like other caplitalist countries who lack our programs... ie, Mexico.... where the most powerful families pretty much dictate government policy and the poor live in cardboard boxes outside their workplace and the conservatives whom want a strict competitive market where the less fortunate are pretty much sh.. out of luck.

It could be said so. At least, if my understanding of European conservatism is the same as the American flavor.

In the US, it is very confusing. Somewhere along the line, classical liberals began to be called conservatives. And mercantilists, or whigs, or what have you, began to be called liberals, and they merged with the peculiar Progressive movement. And to make it worse, in Europe, they have taken up the practice of calling classical liberals, or American conservatives, neoliberals!

Confusing indeed.

Go away mr enlightenment. We are Europeans and know what we are talking about. You are US American and don't.
Answer to the question: Yes. A Liberal in Europe was a bad article because they wanted total freedom for business of all interference by the state, such as labour laws, of all tarrifs and, if possible, of taxes on profits. Exactly what the Republicans want in the US. So they are the real Liberals.

You are confused.

conservatism in the US has a unique meaning as does Liberalism. Liberalism here is the opposite of Libertarianism.

neo-liberalism refers to an economic philosophy, everything but a social component there.

You need to operationally define your terms before proceeding OK?
that would answer your questions, its a problem of semantics not knowledge.
