Even over this Labor Day weekend, when historically gas prices have always gone up; I cannot ever remember them going down over Labor Day. Cynical folk are saying this is in an effort to make people believe the Republicans are doing a good job and the Iraq war is going well, and thus influence the elections. I've seen gas prices drop by 10 cents in the last few days, and they are still dropping. Also true where you are? What do you think about this as politcal strategy? Will it influence your vote?

andy g, are you aware that all of the companies in the petroleum industry, from crude to the pump, have made record profits since the start of the war? Do you think they have no stake in keeping Republicans in office?

rm a gedeon, did it escape your notice that Bush has been tied to the oil and gas industry for most of his adult life? That he used to own a (failed) oil company? That the Saudi bin Laden oil family was in Washington to see him when 9/11 happened, and he lifted the restrictions on air travel in the immediate aftermath to get them home? This was widely reported for a while, but how quickly we forget...

White 2.5rs, I may very well be an idiot, but you appear to be living in a fantasy. Oil and gas companies have made billions in the last few years, more than ever before. This is also widely reported, as they must post their earnings publicly every quarter. However much the government taxes them, it's not hurting their profits any; they have ample reason to want to keep Republicans in office.

While the price of oil has been dropping, it is certainly political. Elections are coming. All kinds of good stuff could happen but given the speeches I've been hearing , I doubt it. Gas is down in central Mi. by 50 cents but still $1.75 MORE than 6 yrs ago. at this time. No republican vote from this house. This area used to be largely republican but voted democratic 2 yrs ago!! I have a hunch it will again, too.

First I would emphatically state that the President cannot influence gas pricing at the pump unless he were to release an enormous amount of reserves, which of course Congress would either have to approve or they would be screaming about it if he did it to try and influence opinion.
Second there are many websites that describe on a daily basis the movement of prices in the oil industry as well as good analytics as to why. These sites by the way are not at all biased, they do not care about your political bias or affiliation, just seeking to educate and not spin or propagandize what is going on.
Third you have to be completely paranoid to think your suppostion could or would ever happen.

There is at least a 50 year history of gas prices dropping after labor day.
You buy transportation fuel stock in the Spring sell in Sept and buy Home heating fuel stocks. When winter is over sell your heating and buy transportation again.
This is a simple investment path

I think that some over estimated what kind of hurricane season we'd have due to global warming paranoia. However, this is going to change. OPEC will be cutting their production by 10% to get the price back up. Undoubtedly, before November, but we'll see.

Yes it is already happening. Gas in my town went from 3.25 to 2.89 in two weeks for no reason. This will definately influence my vote, I am more certain than ever to vote Democratic in every way, because this just proves what a bunch of manipulative assholes the Republican party is as well as our president. Its a brilliant political strategy considering how stupid the vast majority of americans are. They will fall for it now, just like they did two years ago.

You're an idiot
Bush/the gov isnt going to lower taxes at random to influence voters, then raise it again.
You're probably one of those people who hates the oil/gas companies but then at the same time doesn't think/know the gov taxes oil so badly.

There are SO many factors in the price of gas, as well as the economy in general. Politics is one of those factors, but not the only one. It is NOT a conspiracy. The politicians can NOT make the prices drop.

After George Bush caused Katrina, his friends raised the prices so high that people started driving less. Now he is trying to help his friends the car manufacturers by lowering the price of gas. I say that anyone with that kind of power must be awsome.
