Have you ever left America, any country you go to will have power plants. Why do you think there is a war in Iraq. No, you should be asking "Why is the human race determined to consume all the earth's mineral resources?" The answer is that what we want more than anything else is to sit in a warm house, with a hefty microwave meal, watching banality on the biggest tv we can afford knowing in our hearts that we have the best car in the world in the drive. And we are comforted by the fact that our elected government and their geeky scientists will keep us riding the gravy train forever.

What a wonderfull Question , obviously the result of deep and wise thinking ? , who do you think would best use Mineral Resources ? Mad "Religious" Lunatics and Nations who are dedicated to creating nuclear weapons and to dominate the world by controlling the supply of Oil , Gas,Electricity and all other commodities vital for the survival of the world population. but at least your question gives you the opportunity to "Have a Go" at America - you obviously read the wrong kind of Comics and have no idea which side your "Bread is Buttered on" = God Bless America:

The U.S. creates far more wealth than it consumes. Same for most countries.

As for specific mineral resources, as technology progresses, previously unobtainable minerals become obtainable. ...or manufacturable.

There is no fixed set of wealth--or minerals--in the Earth. As technology progresses, wealth grows over time.

(Sure, there is of course a fixed amount of mass in the Earth, and in the universe. But it is effectively infinite for our purposes. ...so long as we are able to procure the minerals we need at rates faster than we grow.)

It is not just America. The developed nations of the world (USA, Britain, France, Germany, Russia, Japan, Canada, etc) use 90% of the world's natural resources. Hopefully the different initiatives around the world for cleaner alternatives can make way. Companies like this one are making changes in a big way:

The thing is that every nation and person wants to consume all that is need to fulfil a certain "standard" of life. For the Americans it follows the Great American Dream. House, estate, three cars and 2.4 children. This takes extrodinary resources and hence the consumption!

Every country in the world is doing it, not just the US. This will continue until people learn to find alternative fuel sources.

Our society has gotten to the point where we need energy to continue our way of life. It's not like the days of living in a castle with no glass windows or straw huts. We use energy for heat, electricity, and transportation.

Do you think it is only America that uses gasoline or coal?

I guess that that question means that China and India ( the 2 fastest growing economies and industrial bases) don't consume any resources.

I wholeheartedly agree with the xenobyte 72 dude. And , A professor? Der....Don`t think so! It`s taken billions of years for the earth to build up the resources it holds now and only one and a half hundred years for the human race to start depleting them!
