I just purchased some dvds from Britain and my dvd player won't play them since it's the wrong region code.
I need to buy a code free or multi region DVD player. I'm not sure if PAL is going to be a problem since it'll be played on a U.S. tv or if I'll need an adapter. Any suggestions on who makes the best in multi region / code free dvd players? And will it work on a basic tv like I have now and the new hd tv that I want to purchase?

I highly recommend the Philips DVP-642. It retails from $50-$70, is still readily available at many chain electronics/department stores (as well as Amazon), converts PAL to NTSC properly (which, is indeed a factor when playing DVD's from Europe, regardless of what region they are), can easily be hacked to make it region-free, and plays DivX files. It has composite and component outputs, the latter of which should facilitate its connection to an HDTV.

Download software that will let you make copies of your DVD's. IT'S LEGAL TO MAKE A COPY OF SOMETHING YOU ALREADY OWN. It will strip the region off the DVD or you can select the one you want.
