Is there a way to make the Thunderbird alert more visible?

I use Thunderbird on both PC and Mac. I have basically zero qualms with the PC version, but I hide my dock on my Mac and the Thunderbird just doesn't cut it. I'm sure there's an extension that does something, but I Googled and came up with nothing. I know Firefox has a little notification thing, but that doesn't do it for me either.
