Joss Whedon, creator of Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel, actually designed Serenity for anyone to view the film as a stand alone story, although at points it does help to see the series if you want to really see the world further defined and figure out where the occasional reference to the actual show is in place.

Would I recommend viewing the series? Yes.

Is it an absolute must? No.

It would be a good idea as you will fidn that the film would make a bit more sense. It is a great film to watch on its own but if you watch the series before hand then it makes the film even better.

I watched the film under extreme duress (thought it would be Buffy In Space!) and actually really enjoyed it. I haven't seen the series and it made sense to me, but I would like to see the series now.

I suggest watching the first few episodes of the series. I explains a bit of the characters. There is also an episode where the captain gets shot and he flashbacks to how everyone met.

It was made for a non firefly fan base as well as fan based explaining most during the movie but as the series is available for less than £15.00. I would advise that you would find it more enjoyable once you've watched the series

FIREFLY 4EVER!!!!!!!!!!!

I don't think you need to watch the tv show to understand the film.
However, I'd watch it anyway because I think that the show is absolutely, mind-boggling brilliant.
