I go to another store. Every time I go to Wal-Mart they are out of a certain product. One night I happened to arrive just after their delivery came. Turns out they only get 6 at a time.
At other stores (not Wal-Mart), the worst is when the product is in their ads, such as a new CD, and it's not in stock. At one big chain music store, they didn't even get it shipped to them.

My first job out of high school was at a grocery store. I can't speak for all grocers, but the place where I worked would issue rain checks on sold out items.
Also, a lot of people don't know this, but if you get to the register and a scanned item is a different price from what's advertised on the shelf, you're suppose to get it free. False advertisement is no joke to a lot of consumers, and if your grocer doesn't offer the item for free, or if they refuse to be agreeable in some way, contact the vendor or the company that produces the product. They'll send you free product in a heartbeat to keep your business.

But, I will let the manager KNOW that I am going to another store.
Here in Hawaii - Safeway usually has everything but is quite a bit more expensive than Foodland. So, we used to shop at Foodland for most things, then head over to Safeway once a week or so (farther away) ... but Foodland was almost always out of something we wanted ... so now we rarely go there.
So, companies lose business all the time for these reasons, and apparently don't care.
If I ran a business, and lost even one customer to bad service or isolence ... there would be a mutiny.

Not all that often, maybe once a month or so.
And if it is an item I have to have, i.e. I'm baking a cake and need a cup of sugar, I would buy an alternative, if none exists, I will just go to another store.
I would never bother to tell the sales person. If they keep a good inventory, they probably already know.

If I really need that type of product I will buy an alternative. If it become an everytime I go to that store and need that product and they don't have it I would atop going to that store.

About twice a month. I do my shopping according to whats on sale , it saves money and i can usually afford to splurge with the money i save on other things i need . but back to point sometimes the sale items are something they don't carry and i wasn't aware of that.@tell manager they will usually subsitute something of equal value in place it for the same price Example-best choice apple juice reg. price 1.99 32oz. on sale for 1.29 out of it so they offered a high priced apple juice reg. 2.89 for the bc sale price it was a better brand.
