Mock Twinkie® Filling
1 cup milk
1 cup granulated sugar
1/2 cup Crisco® (white)
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
5 tablespoons flour
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 cup butter
Mix flour with milk; boil until thick, then cool. After mixture has cooled, beat until fluffy (10 to 15 minutes). Add remaining ingredients, beating well as you add them individually, one at a time. Spread the filling between layers of cake.
NOTE: The longer the milk and flour mixture is beaten, the fluffier the filling will be.
My mother used to make this but she called it Spry frosting because instead of Crisco, she used Spry, which is pretty much the same. It's delicious, not too sweet, and does not need refrigeration.

Vanilla Buttercream Frosting
Makes enough for one 2-layer 9-inch cake or 2 dozen cupcakes*
1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter, softened
6 to 8 cups confectioners’ sugar
1/2 cup milk
2 teaspoons vanilla extract
Place the butter in a large mixing bowl. Add 4 cups of the sugar and then the milk and vanilla. On the medium speed of an electric mixer, beat until smooth and creamy, about 3-5 minutes. Gradually add the remaining sugar, 1 cup at a time, beating well after each addition (about 2 minutes), until the icing is thick enough to be of good spreading consistency. You may not need to add all of the sugar. If desired, add a few drops of food coloring and mix thoroughly. (Use and store the icing at room temperature because icing will set if chilled.) Icing can be stored in an airtight container for up to 3 days.
*Note:
If you are icing a 3-layer cake, use the following recipe proportions:
1 1/2 cups (3 sticks) unsalted butter
8 to 10 cups confectioners’ sugar
3/4 cup milk
1 tablespoon vanilla extract

Try calling the bakery at Costco and ask them if they will sell you the frosting directly. (I love the chocolate pudding frosting the make!!) Otherwise, you can try this recipe... I've made it myself, and it's a decent one compared to a cooked frosting, which is a bit more difficult to make.
1 (3 1/2 ounce) package instant vanilla pudding or banana cream instant pudding
1 cup sugar
1 cup milk
1 cup shortening
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
Place all icing ingredients into medium-sized bowl.
Mix with electric mixer on high speed until icing becomes fluffy and thick enough to spread (this takes a while, about 3-4 min.) Spread on top of cooled cake.
Refrigerate entire cake for a few hours before serving for best taste, and serve cold.
OR
Creamy frosting....
2 egg whites
1 1/2 c. sugar
3/4 c. hot evaporated milk
3/4 c. margarine
3/4 c. Crisco shortening
3 tsp. vanilla
Beat egg whites until stiff. Add sugar and hot evaporated milk. Beat until creamy. Add margarine, Crisco and vanilla and beat until creamy and smooth.

The easiest way to make a whipped cream frosting is to make sweet cream. You've got a few days to play with the recipe to get it to your own taste but I use 4 ingredients.
heavy whipping cream
a touch of real vanilla
sugar to taste
and about 1 tbs of vanilla pudding powder per half pint of whipping cream.
Add cream and vanilla to cold stainless bowl.
Put electric mixer on low and sift in powders
Beat till you have stiff peaks (when you pull mixer out cream forms peaks that don't fall)
