The recipe I always use for basic buttercream frosting uses half butter & half shortening. Also, if you want the icing to be pure white...DO NOT use the regular vanilla extract or it will give the icing a creamish tint. In that case, buy the clear vanilla extract by Wilton from Michaels craft stores.

* 1/2 cup margarine or butter
* 1/2 cup shortening
* 1/8 teaspoon salt
* 1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla extract
* 4 cups sifted confectioners' sugar
* 1/4 cup milk or water

DIRECTIONS:

1. In a large bowl, cream butter and shortening until light and fluffy. Add salt, vanilla, confectioners' sugar and milk. Beat well.

If you mean buttercream, I have a really easy recipie for you.
Butter (it's a lot easier if the butter is room temperature)
Confectioner's Sugar (powdered sugar)
Milk
a hint of vanilla (or any other flavoring you'd like)

Mix the butter and sugar together until they're thoroughly combined, add milk as needed to thin the mixture. Add the flavored extract last. Oh, if you want more frosting, just use more butter and sugar.

1 cup Land O'Lakes butter
1 can sweetned condensed milk and some vanilla
Whip the butter untill it's light and fluffy and add the condensed milk spoon by spoon (it is very important), add the vanilla.
It tastes really good.
Did you know that if you boil the can of condensed milk for 2 hours it becomes really delicious: brown and with caramel-like taste. I usually boil like 5 cans, and keep them for the frosting. It is especially good with some of my signature recipes.
If you want to try boiling the sweetened condensed milk, see to it that the cans are always entirely under water, otherwise they might explode.

Chocolate Buttercream Frosting

1/2 cup butter, softened
2/3 cup cocoa powder
2 teaspoon vanilla
3 cups confectioners' sugar
6-8 tablespoons water, depending upon thickness you want

With electric mixer on high, beat butter until fluffy. Beat in cocoa powder and vanilla on low. Gradually beat in confectioners' sugar, alternating with water, until desired thickness is achieved. For thinner frosting use more water. For thicker frosting, use less water.
