I've found that if I peel or cut an onion with my contacts in, I don't cry at all. With my glasses, completely different story. I could barely finish because it was so intense. I also like someone's suggestion of using a food processor, but I don't see how that would help with peeling. Good luck!

Using a knife, cut a cone out of the bottom of the onion (where the roots come out). The diameter of this cone should be about a third of the diameter of the onion, and about 1/3 deep. Take this piece and throw it away This piece contains the part/gland that makes you cry when you're chopping it up. Once you have got that piece out, chop off the top, peel, and slice the onion.

The trick is to try not to cut into the root part. Slice the onion in half, remove the top bit but keep the bottom bit while you pull the skin back. Stick the onion flat side down on the board and chop, holding the peeled skin to keep it steady. Cut off the bottom bit last, et voila! Repeat on the other half.

You can also try whistling while you do it, that works too...

Refridgerate the onion for a little while before cutting. Also, I've found that having a fan on in the room helps.

1. squeeze fresh lemon juice on the cutting board before cutting
2. put the onion in the freezer for about 7-10 minutes before cutting it

Both of these methods work perfectly.

Peel the onion with the water running on it, and it will make it easier. Otherwise, you can try to keep glasses and something on your nose.
