look at that website. dont listen to tha ppl that tell you pits are mean. it depends on how they're raised. if raised to be a mean dog, any dog is gonna be mean. pit bulls by nature, however, are tha sweetest most loving dogs. all they or any dog need, is love and attention

I would do A LOT of research and think about your life 10-15 years from now. Will you have kids? Move to another state? Go to school? All these things you have to think about before getting any dog, but especially a Pit. Pits are illegal in some states, and in some instances not the entire state, but certain parts of certain states. Some insurance companies won't insure you if you have a Pit or any breed grouped in the "Bully Breed" category.

There have been a lot of bad media surrounding Pits or dogs that look like Pits (therefore people just assume that's what breed did it), therefore, there are far more precautions you have to take when you own a Pit.

I don't think you should depend on people here to tell you whether or not you should own a Pit. You know your life situation...we don't. A while back, Yahoo Pets had a service on it where you could answer questions they give you about the type of dog you wanted and your lifestyle and it would tell you whether the dog you wanted was right for you or not. I would look for something like that on the web. Read up on them. Contact breeders and ask questions about the breed (not about the dogs THEY are breeding, but about the breed itself).

Good luck! They really are a wonderful breed, depending on correct breeding and the individual dog's temperament.

Are ready for one?
There is a lot to think about. I used to be a Humane Officer. I must say I have seen a lot. I have seen perfectly nice pit bulls. I have seen nasty pit bulls. I think their are a lot of factors. Breeding and environment are very important. If you are good with the dog and are lucky in the breeding, you could have a great pet.
You also have to think about if you are ready for the public out there. As you can see with the already posted answers and the ones to come, there are a lot of people out there that completely believe all pit bulls are mean. Are you ready to go out with your perfectly nice dog and people run the other way just because of it's breed?

I also want to make the point...It isn't just that breed that can be bad! I once went to a woman's house to pick up her golden retriever who had broken her arm from biting it. Out of no where the dog turned ficious on her. I had a friend growing up that their cocker spaniel turned on her sister. As an ex-officer, I don't trust chihuahuas. They can be nasty little ankle bitters due to the owners never letting their paws touch the ground.

No matter what you decide, good luck to you! I hope you find a great pet!

Wow is about all that I can say to most of the other answers... Ok so lets clear some things up... Pit Bulls are not mean and viciouse dogs. In fact they were used originally as childrens dogs. The reason that people have such a negitive veiw on them is because of the media. The dogs that you see on the media have been rasied as guard dogs or have been ignored and neglected. Pit Bulls are wonderful dogs and need homes all over. Another fact that most people dont know is that Labs used to have the same Media attention that pit bulls have so think about that one! Oh ya and in answer to get your question YES please do get one. Make sure to go to training classes also.

If you are very careful about the breeder you get the puppy from, if you are commited to proper socializing and training then yes go for it. Just remember ANY dog regardless of breed takes time and commitment in order to be a good dog and a welcome member of the family and the neighborhood. Also remember since the Pit Bull breed has gotten such a bad reputation(very undeserved it's neglegent owners that cause the problem not the breed) you will have to work even harder at training and socializing to prove the dog . I also would advise that as soon as the dog is old enought that you test it for the AKC Canine Good Citizen award.

Not unless you getting it as a puppy, and not unless you are very familiar with animal training and willing to invest a lot of time into an already high maintenance breed.

Instead of getting yourself into an situation where you can't control the animal and are confronted with the prospect of giving it away. I suggest you think about what it is you like about pit bulls and see if you can find those same traits in a more managable dog.

The worst thing you could do would be to invest into an animal because it is a popular breed.

Certainly with powerful breeds such as a pit bull terrier spaying and neutering are an absolute necessity.

Last year here in San Francisco two family pitbulls attacked and killed the 12 yr old son of the household. The poor mother has even been brought to court charged with child endangerment.

The female dog was in heat and the male was mating with her.

Alot of people think that pit bulls are mean. It is all in how you raise the dog. You can make any dog mean and you can make any dog nice. I have a pit bull and she is the sweetest thing ever. She is great around children and would lick you to death before ever snapping at you. She has NEVER shown me any signs of bean mean or that she would turn on me. She is the nicest dog and so sweet.

You better check to make sure that pit bulls aren't prohibited in your town. I don't know you, your age or your abilities, but I think you are asking for trouble by getting a pit bull.

Pit Bulls are agressive by nature, even the ones who have been reared gently can ,and will turn on you for no apparent reason. The possibility is always there with agressive breeds, such as pit bulls, and dobermans.
