Makes sure it's okay with your family to get a dog. There's nothing worse than having your selfworth in turmoil on a bad day, and everyone yelling at you about your beloved dog.

Find out in the yellow pages where there are some local dog trainers. Then go and 'crash' in on their classes. Look at how some of the people are doing with their various dogs. Most of them will just LOVE talking about their dogs. They can discuss which sort of dog will best suit you because they are seeing you in person and can see how you react to their dogs.

There might be people there that can let you know when the next dog show might be. You can go and watch dogs catching frisbees and doing agility or flyball. You'll get some sort of idea of what you'd like your dog to be like that way. Ask different owners how hard it is to take care of the dog's grooming, how much exercise they need, and anything that comes to mind.

People online will often try to promote the kind of dog they love. Nothing wrong with that, but those might not be the kind of dog that will open up your world for you. A great choice in a dog will help you make friends, will give you confidence, will teach you about yourself, will let you teach the dog about being a good partner and also in that way help a little bit in letting you learn the sort of things you have strengths in. The wrong kind of dog might make you feel more reclusive, more helpless and cause a lot of grief if it isn't a healthy dog or has a difficult temperament.

A dog is a wonderful partner that can be with you for the next ten years or more. Take your time choosing, because ten years is a long time. I've found that my choice in dogs has opened up a lot of opportunities for me, and I've met such interesting people and have grown all the stronger and better for it.

best dog for anyone who simply needs a friend is a dog who is rescued from the SPCA or other animal shelter.. no jumpy puppies, but a dog who for no fault of his own was left there by his owners...
all pets should be family pets, an 11 year old cannot make a LIFETIME commitment to a dog.. this is why many dogs are at the SPCA because people got them for their kids but the kids didnt look after then so the dogs got dumped.. or the kid went to college and the dog got dumped..
an 11 year old cannot afford vet bills, food, toys, etc.. this is a parents job so ultimately if the parents dont want a dog and are not ready to make the commitment themselves then they shouldnt get a dog

if the familiy is ready - go to your local shelter and look - dont be in a rush the right dog will come eventually....

stay away from intelligent breeds like border collies.. as they will be destructive if not given CONSTANT mental stimulation.. the shelter staff should be able to help with choice

A Pembroke Welsh Corgi- Happy and sweet, short and strong, and very happy to spend time with their owners. They have great personalities and love to please their owners. I got my first one when I was 11, and I have had the best time with him! They are good guard dogs, and go dogs to play with. Not much of a lap dog, like their own space, but always love to be around people and other animals. They get along great with other dogs and cats, and love to play! They do need excersise, though, because if they get fat, it can reallllllly be bad for their backs (since they are so long). They also really like to swim after they get used to it, so if you want a swimming dog, corgis are great!
Also, if you get one as a puppy, don't use the pee-pads, if you do, then they will pee all over your carpets and rugs.

Good Luck!

PS. Pembroke Welsh Corgi is the kind of dog that the Queen of England has!

I would highly reccomend a mixed breed like mine an Australian cattle dog(red heeler) mixed with a red chow chow dog Bandit is my best friend and always will be. He is very protective but will get a long with anybody unless if he suspects the person is dangerous. He is the best dog i have ever had

A mutt like the others have said.. try the spca or the aspca... if you want a certain breed though, try a bearded collie (not a border collie) a bearded collie is really loyal to its owner and loves children... well and they are just pretty, thats the type of dog I had when I was eleven. Good luck.

Any dog is a good breed for someone who needs a friend. It all depends on how much room you have as to weather you get a extra small, small, medium, large, extra large, humongous breed of dog. It also depends on what size dog you want running through your house. One as little as a mouse, or one as big as a horse. Good luck.

I have a chihuahua puppy, about 7 months old, and she loves my six year old. She follows around everywhere and is very cuddly. I think it's a good dog for kids because they are sweet and not too big. She's much easier to care for than a bigger dog. She's basically like a lap cat. We got our son a weimaraner puppy that's three months old and while he's very sweet, he's much more high maintenance and not as easy to cuddle and take along with.

depending on how active she is a mix breed are always the best. or a rescued Lab that is older, they have a long puppy life and this can be hard to deal with in the home.

You should go to the AKC website and take the test to see which breed would fit your needs the best. Then I'd look on petfinder.com or my local shelter to find one.
