Oil will run out in ~38 years, unless we begin using alternative (hopefully less environmentally harmful) energy sources.

Why isn't it cheaper? Because it is in great demand here in the US, and now China and other developing countries need more and more energy.

Why can't we make it cheaper? There is only so much oil left, and the cheapest way to get it is to suck it out of the ground. There are other methods (processing carbon waste, mining certain tar sands, etc) but those are only profitable when oil reaches a certain price.

About the "gas from corn," that isn't actually gasoline, it's ethanol (the same kind as in liquor) which is produced out of corn. It is used as a fuel mixed into or instead of petroleum. Ethanol is a very clean-burning fuel.

By the way, hydrogen isn't the answer yet. 95% of hydrogen is produced by burning natural gas, and we have less gas then we do oil.

Developing the product isn't the major problem, it is spreading it to the masses. Many households can't afford brand new vehicles, and many gas stations and shipping companies can't afford to make the transition to an alternative fuel. These are the problems that are faced in spite of the spikes in technology.

Gas can be extracted pretty cheaply. However, demand is outpacing supply, so there needs to be an increase in gas price to reflect the current situation. You can't sell gas for the same price as you did 10 years ago if there's not as much left, even if you can extract it at no cost to yourself.
