I don't think it's okay to make fun of people who aren't as smart as I am, but sometimes I just can't help the urge to be sarcastic or a smart a$$. It's human nature, I guess.

Your question implies that you approve of making fun of people who are as smart or smarter than one's self. When I make fun of people, I make the assumption that they are at least of average intelligence. With respect to internet forums, for example, the people who post there make the agreement to interact as peers. If they act as inferior, that is not the fault of those with whom they interact.
BTW, if people only make fun of people as smart or smarter than themsleves, who do Stephen Hawking and Michio Kaku make fun of?
