There are a lot of film sequels that don't really follow the story of the first one. Or they follow it very loosely but they are all in the same genre, ie horror, comedy etc. I don't think there are any that completely switch from the original. Good question though.

I think by definition, a sequel has to be from the same general genre, but if we're to presume I can be general about my definition then take Horror and Suspense:

If you were to look at a movie like "The Blair Witch Project" and say That's a fictional Suspense-Documentary and the sequel, which would just be described as a Horror film.

Ooo, a really cool question and I'm stumped. Like the Kill Bill answer though. Wish I had thought of it.

The closest I can come up with is Die Hard With a Vengeance. Its clearly the same genre (action) but the situation, style etc. is different from the previous two.

From Alien (suspense thriller) to Aliens (pure Action movie)
But two excellent films - shame they made alien 3 and resurrection which turned the whole lot into a joke. As for Alien vs predator - Oh dear God!!! put that one in the B-movie genre!!!

Definitely not Pirates of the Caribbean, tho probably Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory! The first one was for a wide audience that included grown-ups and kids, but the second one was mainly just for kids!
