we have been desensitized AND instead of going for scary they go for gory and bloody and don't really worry as much about the story line. I think it is scarriest if it is possible that it could happen.

I don't know, I think they are more blood, guts, and everything else. I saw the Exorcist when it first came out and that was a scary movie, it was not all killing, blood and guts, it was a good story. So was the original Omen. The Original Amityville Horror, were good too.

I think the movies are all good they make too many sequels, Examples- Friday the 13th-I lost count to how many of those there are (I was watching those in High School now I am over 35.

They have made so many Halloween Sequels-I saw that in high school too.

I just hope they don't start remaking those.

I think as we mature, we can reason what is real and what is fantasy. Also we know how these movies are made and the special effects to produce them. When I watch a horror movie now, I look how they did the effects that is to achieve them. Sometimes the scariest movies are the ones the are based on true stories and account.
e.g. : The Amityville Horror and The Serpent and The Rainbow.

Hope this helps

First, we are desensitized, but more importantly, up until a few years ago, they were cliched, Freddie, Jason, Mike Myers, didn't matter all interchangeable. Predictable plot lines. If you could call them plots. It seemed there were no more Hitchcock type movies. Not only did he give a bit of a scare, but made you think. For a while, it was predictable, sex, murder. Then there was the Scream movies. Clever idea, self effacing humor, but not all that scary. Then some good psychological thrillers came out. Se7en, Fallen, The Sixth Sense, Saw. Getting better.

I would say it's because the people who make these films don't give a rat's *** about the STORY anymore. They think that we'll be satisfied with any ridiculous plot and collection of characters, as long as there are a bunch of gross-out special FX involved.

It's just not true. The best horror films have always told great and compelling stories, and that's exactly what has been lacking these past several years.

Lately it seems that too much emphasis is put on special effects and comp graphics. Scary is not a new Chainsaw Massacre, it's Cape Fear. The new ideas are out there, just not being exploited properly.
Get a good director to do human psyche movies, and you can still scare the panties off a football player!

It is called suspension of disbelief. Suspension of disbelief refers primarily to the viewer to accept the premises of a work of fiction, even if they are fantastic or impossible and the ability to overlook limitations so that these do not interfere with the illusion.

As we get older the suspension of disbelief or our ability to fully immerse our minds in fantasy becomes harder. We see inconsistencies, goofs and know things aren't possible. Unfortunately, this takes a lot of the horror out of the films.

i wouldnt say its that they arent scary... most of todays "scary" movies are based off of older horror films... most horror fans have seen the originals of the newer ones first and already know whats going to happen, so that makes the new ones not scary.

Why do we need horror movies to scare us when we have Bush, Cheney and Rumsfeld scaring us with nonsense every other day?

Our reality has become a horror movie...

I think we have enough scary stuff to watch on the news these days. Just a guess.
Have a nice day.
