As a part of basic training, your confidence and individual thought is totally removed, then replaced with what is necessary to survive the horror and mental wrenching situations possible in war. Confidence is just a small part of the whole that is built anew.

One way to instill confidence in a subordinate is to gradually increase their responsibilites. This is assuming you have plenty of time available. Give that person a simple tast that you know he can do easily. Have him repeat the task as often as possible. Then you add another task, then another and so on. Another way, when time is critical, is the "baptism by fire". Let him know that he needs to be able to do this and do it now. An important part of this is that you or the surperior officer in charge impart an attitude of confidence and trust in the subordinate. Often time the soldier will succeed if for no other reason than fear of letting his officer down. This only works if the officer is liked or well respected by the men. Building confidence in someone who has none is very difficult and time consuming. If the lack of confidence is due to lack of experiance, than the only thing for it is to force the experiance on him. If it is due outside factors such as family issues or peer issues then you should try to remove him from those issues during the trainning. I have known people who had extreme confidence issues when working with other people for fear of looking like a fool or failing in front of someone. These same people excelled at their tasks when they were isolated and secluded. Remove the outside pressure and you can remove the confidence block. Of course there are some people who do have some psycological issues causing lack of confidence. In these cases the person needs professional help and should be removed from the training enviornment.

I am AD military...don't quite understand your question. Are you the "leader"? There is a difference between leaders and supervisors/trainers. Not meaning to offend...just to clarify.

Break up his job into little tasks that are easily accomplished. Before you know it he has accomplished them all. That should help him feel confident.
