I'm not sure what you mean by other name. I'm actually (coincidentally) watching the third movie right now. Buckbeak is a hippogriff, if that's what you mean. (I'll have to check the spelling).

Edit: It looks like I got the spelling correct. Below is an interesting link on Buckbeak explaining how they made/filmed him.

Edit: Above answer w/ Witherwings is correct. He is renamed that in the 6th book (Harry Potter & the Half Blood Prince), as Harry inherits Buckbeak & gives him to Hagrid to look after. To avoid suspicion, they rename him. Below link from Wikipedia explains the derivation of the name.
