Adobe is a leader in this field and I have found their Photoshop Album Starter Edition to be quite handy to make basic corrections for photos. It is also free and to find out more or download, surf to http://www.adobe.com/products/photoshopalbum/starter.html.

Similar to the Adobe Photoshop Album Starter Edition is Picasa from Google which can also make basic corrections/enhancements for photos. Check out, http://picasa.google.com/

A not so recent but relevant comparison between Adobe Photoshop Album Starter Edition and Picasa can be found http://searchenginewatch.com/showPage.html?page=3460061

I personally use both Picasa and Photoshop Album Starter Edition for basic photo editing/enhancements/corrections and rely on Photoshop for more advanced features.

As lwcomputing before me stated, GIMP is a good free photo editing software. It was originally designed for UNIX/LINUX but now has a Windows version. And also check out a list of free photo editors with brief descriptions at http://graphicssoft.about.com/cs/imageediting/tp/freephotoedw.htm (GIMP is also in this list).

I hope that this answer has been useful, please feel free to contact me if required.

gimp

GIMP is the GNU Image Manipulation Program. It is a freely distributed piece of software for such tasks as photo retouching, image composition and image authoring. It works on many operating systems, in many languages.

It's like photoshop, but not.

i'd recomend you purchase a replica of Adobe components 2.0. it relatively is an older version (version 4.0 is the currect launch) I even have this version and that's amazingly stable. it relatively is super for enhancing, cropping, printing etc your photographs. when you consider that is an older version you may get a replica on Ebay for much less that $15 which comprise postage. (you additionally can get copies on Amazon)
