Well Trina there are several things possible:
1. If the person has made a will about how he should be buried or burned or drowned or his body given to medical students etc. , the body would be disposed accordingly.
2. If the person didnt make a will, then I guess his family members decide on how the body should be disposed
3. If the person died in a natural or man made calamity and the body was not claimed the government might decide as per the rules of the country.

How and where you're buried depends on what church you belong to, so obviously an Atheist wouldn't be buried in a Jewish cemetary or something like that. However, there are public cemetaries in many cities, and others may wish to have their ashes spread in the ocean. Personally, I kind of like the idea of my loved ones having a place to go to where they can visit me. But perhaps it doesn't have to be a grave. I'm not sure, but that's an excellent question.

A friend of my husbands, who was an atheist, was taken directly to the grave, buried... and a huge party followed in rememberance of him. Personally, I thought that was a better way to hold a funeral than all the sobbing for hours at the funeral home, then again at the gravesite and then again at the relatives/friends house. I would much rather be remembered as I was when I was alive, not laying in a box.

Same way just no religious service. In the US the way we bury people is dictated by law and city codes more than religion.

However they like. I would like to be burnt to smoldering ash and returned to the earth. And a huge party for a visitation first.
Oh, I agree with the guy below me in that I would really like to be left in the woods for the animals to eat me, but I'm pretty sure that's illegal. Guess I could volunteer for one of those forensics studies on decay...

I'm not atheist, but unbelievers are buried like believers, in a box. (there wouldn't be a church service).

When you don't believe in God (as I do), you just don't care how you get buried because you don't believe in heaven. You believe that you just stop to exist, period.
