they say sperm can live in the female body for 3-5 days in perfect condtions but i read over 75% of pregnancies occur if you have sex the day before and on ovulation day

You can only concieve the day you have sex. you can't tell if your pregnant with a home pregnancy test till later because your body hasn't produced enough pregnancy hormone to detect threw urine yet, but if you go take a blood test you can tell the day you become pregnant.

I've been doing a lot of reading on this lately. It seems as you would potentially have more fertile quality cervical mucus in the days before ovulation that help the sperm on their journey to the egg. That way the sperm are ready and waiting when the egg drops. An egg is only viable for a very short period of time so if you wait to have sex the day of ovulation you may miss your window.

So you concieve when you ovulate, but it can (and may more likely) be from sex you had in the days prior to ovulation.

Another good time to try and conceive is right after your period.
