I guess they annually have an open auction where unclaimed or confiscated but legal items are sold to the highest bidder. Pretty sure that is what the Customs agency does anyway.

My father happens to work for TSA at our local airport. While I certainly don't know much about his job, I know a little bit.

Employees are not allowed to bring home items that are confiscated from passengers. Nor is there an auction held at some point with your stuff going to the highest bidder.

*A lot of confiscated items go in the trash.
*I don't know if this is still the case, but I know that at one point they used to hold your items temporarily if you were returning to the area.
*Some confiscated items are kept to be used in training as examples of items that are not allowed on planes.
*Some confiscated items are kept and used in evaluation-testing...i.e., someone will put such items in a piece of luggage and run it through the checkpoint to see if the employees catch and/or confiscate the items as they are supposed to.
*Seriously illegal stuff (and you!) might be turned over to the police and/or the appropriate government agency for investigation.

They were talking to airport employees on the t.v. news tonight, and they were saying that the garbage was up by about 30% because of the new no-liquids rule. Someone else also mentioned that it was going into the trash. It seems like a terrible waste, doesn't it?

The employees pretty much have first grab at it. Taking what they want because the passengers are too lazy to step out of line and go ship the item home to themselves. In most cases its free from the airport.

I believe they are taken to the police station and after some time, if they are legal, they are sold in the auction.
