If you are healthy and think you want to join, call a recruiter. Especially if you have prior military service or have a special skill, you can get a waiver and enlist.

Because you probably wouldn't be able to make it physically. Military boot camp is the hardest thing most people will physically accomplish in their entire lifetime. The body is more prone to injuries as it gets older and slower to heal. I had a hard enough time as it was when I went, and I was 22. I can't imagine trying to make it at 44. The military would be spending all their budgets on health care, sucking up the money from other needed areas. Even if you are in tip top shape for your age, it would be an excessive strain on you. Have you ever tried running/hiking for 5-10 miles in long pants, boots, long sleeve cammie blouse over a skivvie shirt, a kevlar (helmet), 782 gear with 2 full canteens, an alice pack with about 50-70 pounds of gear in it, and carrying an M16? It's a pain in the ***. The government isn't age discriminating, it's being smart. If you feel like you have a lot to offer and want to get close as possible to the military, try a contracted or government job. You'd be working on bases, with military personnel.

Discrimination is only illegal when its not state sanctioned.
You cannot go to a Service Academy if you are over 21 (Or something like that), you can't be president if you are under 35.
Depending on your rank, you have to retire at a certain time (not age determinate, but basically) is that Rank Discrimination?
They only want people of high physical caliber. People they can run into anything if needed, Older people put a strain on the medical abilities the military can provide. The military is not a geriatrics ward looking to take care of people who are getting up in age. People who are older than can keep up with a 20-ish person are the exception, not the rule and to allow some and not all would also be too burdensome on the admittance procedures to weed out those who are in it for just the medical benefits vs those who are willing and able to serve.
You could always apply for a GS position. there are many civilian contracted jobs and positions available that would allow you to serve, you just don't wear the uniform.

Being in the military, I'd love to see anyone that WANTED to join let in.
But at the age of 44, risks of injury are up. as well as the fact that you won't serve as long more likely.
So you say, people over 44 are in the military and have been for years?
exactly, these people have been in this training for years, and the body can take that shock factor since it has become used to it.
Just entering the military, your body wouldn't be used to the harshness it would endure.
Well it might, depending on current occupation, but I've found that they don't look into that.
Though the military DOES accept people over age limits for things such as Doctors and medical jobs. And many doctors do retire and join the army and such to feel patriotic. well some do,not alot. but meh..

It's not discrimination, it's for your own good. The training and most of the schooling are rough and tough. You can't keep up with all those 18-25 year olds. You risk injury and other health matters. I know you probably do have alot to offer, but you should have thought about that a few years ago. If you feel that strongly about joining, go down and talk to a recruiter. You never know what waivers he might be able to get for you.
Good luck!!

The US Military is not a employment office and when you reach a certain age, your body starts wearing out and I don't care how healthy you think you are, military training is tough and it is not age descrimination. Why didn't you join the US Military when
you were younger??

Very simple, a guy 44 years old is much harder to brainwash than a guy who is say between 17 and 24. I was in the Army and brainwashing is what they do.

Hmmmmm i dont know...i am assuming because older people are just more delicate than younger people. I am NOT saying that you are not capable but i guess thats why. I mean atleast thats how it works in plastic surgery...if you are over a certain age then they wont operate on you because older people tend to have more complications than younger people.
