My ancestors were white and Quakers, they helped many slaves escape to the North, they also bought the slaves then gave them their freedom and helped them with housing, food, tools and educated them so they would have a better life. They were very wealthy at one point but as a result of their actions helping slaves my ancestors land and homes were taken by the state and sold bit by bit, they were fined exorbinant fines, jailed, ridiculed, beaten, harassed and ostracized from the community and still they helped free and educate slaves. In less than a generation they lost all their wealth, all their land and standing in the community and were left with very little.....my question is do my ancestors deserve reparations even though they are white?

The Irish were one of the worst instances of slavery in the history of man and it makes you wonder why that has been ignored. They weren't even rated as slaves more like disposable items, black slaves were considered valuable property thus had a value, the Irish were considered less than dirt...its a shame but its the truth. My spouse had Irish ancestors so I know what you are talking about.

They do deserve reparations. But like the American Indians, don't take the cash, take the casino gambling rights. Much better in the long run. You can always build a nice museum in your casino (like the Indians did in CT) with your millions of dollars.

Now legally, you may be entitlted to nothing since they were probably the victims of the laws of the time and the state could cook up reasons for why the actions were justified. The Indians were on better ground since they could claim they were at an extreme disadvantage to the settlers and their very culture was destroyed by the colonists.

I've got you beat. My ancestors were Irish. The Irish weren't freed from slavery until the 1920s.

Sorry--I'm in favor of only granting victim status to those who actually were victims--not anyone who may have had ancestors who were enslaved, tortured, lost money, anything. I had an 18th century ancestor who was an indentured servant, but I'm not expecting any payments any time soon.
