Watch the South Park episode "Death Camp of Tolerance". It sums up the whole issue pretty well.

Tolerance is a recent political term used within debates in areas of social, cultural and religious context, as an emphatic antithesis to discrimination, as such may advocate persecution. Its usage came about as a more widely acceptable alternative to "acceptance," the usage of which had been widely derided, as certain cases would not be considered by common society as acceptable. The term is often used in reference to foreign religious belief, as well as to more particular categories, such as discrimination against unusual sexual and social orientation.
The term "tolerance" itself, like "toleration," is controversial and disliked by some due to its implication that the "tolerated" custom or behavior is in fact an aberration. Tolerance implies both the ability to punish and the conscious decision not to, but makes no statement to higher principle. Supporters of the term "tolerance" claim it to be more applicable than "acceptance" and "respect." Detractors of the term suggest that the term is promoted as if it were a principle —one which falters when compared to more elevated concepts such as respect and civility.

that word has almost become meaningless.
i would say tolerance is going about your daily business and not letting stupid stuff that doesn't hurt you affect you. i get the impression that there is a belief that tolerance implies acceptance, but that is not true. i, for example am an agnostic and i usually tolerate the religious symbols around me even though i notice them and they are not something i would choose to display. i am not accepting them, just noticing them and going about my day. but also, someone with a t-shirt on that says "god hates fags" is expecting more tolerance than i am willing to give. similarly, the scene in die hard 3 where bruce willis is to stand in harlem with a sign on his neck that says "n*gg*r" is obviously dangerous, because of the level of tolerance he is hoping for from that community.
we all have different buttons. you can choose to react to someone pushing one of yours or you can ignore it. it is always a choice. there is no right to live your life without seeing offensive things... that is the price of a free society.

Tolerance may be specified as a factor or percentage of the nominal value, a maximum deviation from a nominal value, an explicit range of allowed values, be specified by a note or published standard with this information, or be implied by the numeric accuracy of the nominal value. Tolerance can be symmetrical, as in 40±0.1, or asymmetrical, such as 40+0.2/-0.1. Got it?

The willingness to accept the validity of some idea or some person that is different than you.
It means not hating or punishing someone or something because they are different. It doesn't necessarily require that you agree with the idea or like the person, just that you are willing to let them continue existing on equal terms and with the same rights that you have.

It doesn't mean what it used to. The meaning (for a lot of people) has been changed in the last few years, especially by the homosexual "rights" lobby.
It used to mean you and I can disagree, and feel as strong about it as we want to, as long as I don't harm you or you harm me. I allow you to have your view and you allow me to have mine.
It isn't that way any longer. Now "tolerance" means (to these people [ the homosexual lobby ] that I must agree that what they are doing is ok, that it's alright. And if I don't agree that their perverted lifestyle is ok, then I am "intolerant" and "hateful."
Those are the new buzzwords of the homosexual lobby.
Obviously they want to extinguish any dissent or criticism of their lifestyle. I guess they don't want our voices added to God's (He has already been telling them for years that that lifestyle is wrong and evil, and now our voices are being added to his, and they can't allow that).
