Iraq has never been a stable society since the break up of the Turkish Empire after WW!.
It has only been held together by violence, first by the British and then by home grown tyrants like Saddam Hussein.
It's now in a state of civil war after its "liberation".
This will eventually lead to the break up of Iraq into the Kurdish north, Sunni centre and Shia south all of which will hate each other for many years to come.
The independence of Kurdistan will lead to further unrest in Turkey who occupy territory that the kurds claim as their homeland. This will lead to a war between Turkey and Kurdistan
with the rest of the EU being dragged in if Turkey is a member by then.
This sort of thing will still be going on long after Bush and Blair are dead.

The problem, I believe dates back to the end of the colonial era and the way the area was divided up, Saddam brought stability and held the country together (no I didn't like him but its true). Same was true in Balkans under Tito.

Some may become part of other countries, some may become independent, and some may stay as it is, sadly though it seems like it is going to happen all violently, unlike the recent division of Serbia and Montenegro.

Neither one of those options will happen. What WILL happen is that within five years of the U.S. pulling out, maybe far less time than that, Iraq will sub-divide into three smaller countries representing the three major factions that have vied for control all along.

Neither. The winner of the Iraqi civil war (whoever it is) will dislike America.
