No he's not dead. He was on the news earlier tonight (don't know why as wasn't paying much attention). Apparantly he's the longest serving leader in the world having been in power for the last 53 years. He's about 80 now and as some world leaders have been in power well into their 90's he may be around for a while yet and your trip to Havanna may have to be put on hold a little while longer.

There is nothing stopping you from going to Havana.
I'm presuming that you are a US citizen
Fly to Jamaica and go from there.
or
Fly to Toronto and go from there.
As a Canadian, I've been to Cuba on vacation many times. I highly recommend it. I have met many US citizens on vacation in Cuba.
The Cubans will not stamp your US passport.
