It is a 5 day long celebrationg in the Hindu religion as well as the Sikh religion and some Muslim sects (which basically covers all of India) I forget what all the days are but the second day is Chhoti Diwali, the festival of lights. This is the day that everyone gives gifts as well. It may be interesting to note that the day that is celebrated as the birth of Krishna is coming up on Wednesday, August 16th.

Diwali or Divali (also called Dewali, Dipavali, or Deepavali), Hindu festival occurring on the 15th day of Kartika in the Hindu lunar calendar. The date of Diwali in the Western calendar changes each year, falling sometime in October or November. The festival celebrates Lakshmi, goddess of light and wealth, as well as the New Year and the story of the Ramayana. Diwali, whose name means “garland of lamps,” is marked by the lighting of lamps and candles (inviting the goddess into the house), feasting, and the exchange of gifts. For Sikhs, Diwali celebrates Guru Hargobind's release from prison.

When King Rama returned to his kingdom after 14 years of exile, the people of Ayodya celebrated by lighting the city with earthern oil lamps, hence the name Deep a Wali ( festival of lamp lights). That day is celebrated every year by the Hindus as the festival of lights or Deepawali or Diwali.
