Does anyone else feel like we are in a downward spiral away from common sense? I have seen so many pushes in the abstinence movement, and yet it has repeatedly failed. People contending that by getting someone to sign a piece of paper and say they wont have sex is somehow educating them? This is ridiculous. We have children and parents that are completely ignorant on disease and rather than educating their children about sex, informing them on birth control and how to be safe, and THEN encouraging them to wait... they jump right to the last part... dont have sex, you''' catch AIDS, get pregnant, it will ruin your life and it is better to wait till you are married...
I am not encouraging kids to have sex, but I understand that it is a realistic inevitability. I would rather my child be informed and safe than ignorant, and misinformed.

It seems ridiculous that you have the same people who dont want kids to have dangerous abortions, telling their children nothing about sex, and not letting them know anything about protection...
What? It is so sad....it really really is.

The bible has nothing to do with this... If I went strictly by the bible. I could have slaves (and kill them justly) beat my wife with a switch.
I am not asking about a rule book from 2000 years ago, I am asking about society where more children are going to get HPA to a percentage of 1/3 of the US population if kids keep acting the way that they are... Parents are OBJECTING TO THE VACCINE - because they think that it is encouraging their children to have sex... I hate to have to tell you this, but your kids are going to have sex, and maybe some of them will wait for actual intercourse until they are married, but they WILL engage in dangerous activitys without protection because you refuse to inform them!!!!

true, people, including teenagers are going to have sex, regardless, its a natural thing, people like to do it!the only way to curb std's/pregnancy/aids is through good parenting and education, and for goodness sake, give teenagers the access to condoms and birth control, restricting what your child is curious about will only lead to rebellion, taking control of the situation during experimentation is what makes good parenting

Maybe in your eyes this doesn't have anything to do with the Bible, but it does. It has EVERYTHING to do with the Bible. Abstinence is a spiritual idea at it's roots, not a societal one. The high number of "christian" leaders (I believe there are true, good christians out there, I don't believe many of them are in public office or leadership roles) that we have have turned this into a societal issue, citing STD's and teenage pregnancy as their reasons. These are both issues that deserve our attention as a society. However, the idea that we should abstain from sex until marraige is purely a religious ideal. It is religion that stops us from making all discussions and forms of education on the subject available. It's religion that dictates that intercourse before marraige is a sin, and this gives some girls the idea that anal is okay, as long as intercourse is not vaginal. I could go on and on, and I'll make even less sense than I am right this second. Simple answer to the first question you asked- because their religion tells them to.

The problem is not only disease, it is pregnancy. I see at least 2 16 year old pregnant girls everyday in my work. If someone, anyone, had taken the time to tell these girls what precautions to take, they may have been able to prevent this. It is not necessary for teenagers to be abstinent. They need to have the knowledge, as you have stated, to make the correct decisions, and then live with the consequences if they do not.

Especially because they'll do other things that can still result in an STD in order to avoid doing the act itself. I agree, it's better to educate them so they can make an informed decision instead of pushing the abstinence idea.

With training sublimating your sexual energy into spiritual energy is an extremely valuable spiritual path. The problem with modern abstinence is that there is no training or understanding of this process. It is just a rule based on fear and as a rule based on fear it has no value whatsoever.
If fact, as observed in Catholicism (i.e. priests having sex with boys), these rules separated from our humanity just produce sexual dysfunction.

"I would rather my child be informed " I agree. I wish they knew the serious mistake they are making. Today American children have to know why. Just say no does not work with them.

the facts are that less people got pregnant and caught STDs when the only talk was safe sex or how to have it. Search that one out.

Beware of temptation and keep you from evil. Re write your own rules, do what you want, ignore the Bible & reap the consequences.

Tell God, not us.
It is God's plan that sex is to be enjoyed only between a man and a woman in "the marriage bed".
