I think it's just a movie created to entertain people...no hidden agenda.

I hadn't seen The Exorcist until two years ago ... it just happened to be on and I'd heard people mention it over the years, so I gave it a viewing.
And I was horribly disappointed.
The movie is lame and annoying. The opening sequence seemed to have no real connection or value to the later events. The film wasn't "scary" ... it was just stupid. I can't believe so many people wasted their time watching such an abominable piece of **** ... it's not even on a level I'd consider a B movie ... it's more like a D or an E movie.

the movie is very exaggerated and statistically those who experience possession type happenings are mostly very religious people ... so that statement makes no sense to me
what does make sense to me is that these devout people may feel their sins need punished and through their own belief system and the power of the mind , have created a what looks like possession
we also have to take into account that many exorcism would have been done on people with mental illness or even epilepsy ( as in the Emily Rose story ) and that these illnesses would not have been medically understood

I've seen the movie, and it makes me even more devoted to God,so I don't think it has anything to do with the fact that some people choose to be nonreligious

While I agree w/billthedude the excorcist is just a movie. I disagree with you on the devil issue, the devil is very real the devil is (i believe) an entity of many evil spirits that has been given a name usually hiding behind religuos zealots(koresh in waco, the guy in the caribean who killed all his followers, bin laden, and all the wackos in the middle east blowin themselves up in the name of GOD) surely you cant deny that there is a battle a supernatural one between good and evil. The devil is doing his best to obfusgate the situtation tearing down belief in GOD , convincing us that a strong belief is wrong that your a wacko if you have a strong belief.

Maybe nonreligious but not atheist or agnostic. Atheism and agnosticism are labels for believes (or dis-beliefs), you can't "choose" to believe when it comes to god. To be fair though, I haven't seen the movie.

The Exorcist is completely made up - do the research on it (the real story it's based on was a mischievous adolescent male who was known for seeking attention and playing pranks). There is no literal devil -- it's a symbol for the thought system that our mind chooses when it thinks it's alone and separate from God. When we realize we're not, that's the real heaven.

In response to JackBauer
"you can't "choose" what to believe when it comes to god."
Theists do this all the time either by the religion they choose or how they interpret that religion. If you don't think so and assuming you are a theist, go in to a Roman Catholic church (if you're not) and involve yourself fully in the ritual (or vice versa if you're RC).
Despite the fact that the bible is "god's word" there are even diffferent versions of this.

No. I didn't leave the Catholic Church because they perform closet exorcisms, I left them because of their hypocritical members who figure they can do anything they want because they will be forgiven. Another reason I left was whenever I questioned the beliefs, no one could give me a solid answer, they could only play the "faith" card. I educated myself right away from that mentality.
