how did it figure in to the development of the Christ persona in Christialinty? I am reading a textbook on the philosophy of the Middle Ages. the book states that Logos is an important concept in Christianity, but does not explain what it meant to the Ancient Greeks who are the authors of this concept.

I would like to understand the correlation between the Christian concept of "the word" and the original Greek concept. Thank you

I am sure if you have done any biblical study at all you have seen these two verses referring to Jesus Christ; but I will cite them anyway to add validity and clarification to some readers who may know what we are talking about. Twice in John chapter 1 Jesus Christ is referred to as "the Word" or in the original Greek "ho Logos." "In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God...The Word became flesh and made His dwelling among us. We have seen His glory, the glory of the One and Only, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth" (John 1:1; 14)
Before there was time Jesus Christ existed as the Logos, the intelligence, which gave birth to everything that is and who also became the expression, the Word, explaining the intelligence which is undiscoverable except through His Word and works (Romans 1:20)

I think Logos to the Christian can be described in John 1:1 - "In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God". The "Word" being Jesus (God). That's what it is for Christians.

For the Greeks I would assume that "logos" would just mean "word". If "logos" was coined before it was used in the bible, then I'm sure it meaning "word" would be the case.

Hope that helps a bit!!

The Greek word "logos" :
means THE WORD,or OUTWARD FORM BY WHICH THE INWARD THOUGHT IS EXPRESSED AND MADE KNOWN: also THE INWARD THOUGHT or REASON ITSELF.

In any word ending in "ology" e.g. biology, the suffix "ology" comes from "logos" and means simply " the study of "

Hope this helps you to understand what you are studying.
You are right to clear up the definitions and ROOT of words to get the full concept.

go to wikipedia; it explains it rather well. essentially the word is a bad translation, just like many concepts of christian theology.

The reason. Jesus is the reason. He was with God & is God. The same was in the beginning with God.
