My (ex) boyfriend's family are catholic.
His parent's have both had affairs and have been officially seperated for the past 12 years, but have been sleeping in different rooms (in the same house) for 15 years.
His Mum is still having an affair. Why don't they just get divorced, they are messing their children up, the 2 girls self harm and my (ex) boyfriend is in a state...lost, doesn't know who he is, what he wants...
Also, his Mum has also tried to commit suicide 3 times, in your belief, is even trying to commit suicide a heavy enough sin to go to hell?
I'm sorry if any offence has been taken, I just want to understand so that I can help my (ex) boyfriend through these difficult times.

This is nothing to do with religion. Obviously. Your ex bf is lucky to have someone like you to care about him. I would suggest that if he can afford it and is old enough for him to leave the house and set up his own place. He needs to be away from the strains of that house. Good luck.

+ Sin +

Sin is a deliberate thought, word, deed, or omission contrary to the eternal law of God.

+ Suicide +

Catholics believe suicide when committed in full knowledge and deliberate consent is a complete turning away from God (a mortal sin) and will send a person to hell.

There are 3 conditions of a mortal sin: grave matter, full knowledge, and deliberate consent.

While suicide (or any kind of murder) is always a grave matter, people who commit suicide may not always have full knowledge of what they're doing. Drugs can definitely impair one's thinking, as can other things, such as diseases, intense pain, or anguish.

Therefore, suicide is not automatically treated as a mortal sin.

We are commanded by Christ not to judge others so we leave final judgment to God who alone knows each person's heart.

With love and prayers in Christ.

well, in true catholicism no one condemns themself to hell here on earth regardless of your sins. if, on your death bed after a life of sin, you truly repent your sins then you can gain entrance to the kingdom of heaven. but it must be true repentance (i'm guessing god knows the difference). this act, theoretically can also be done after you die when you are being judged.
everything you have described about your bf's family has nothing to do with catholocism. they are making choices about their lives that are in no way compelled or influenced by being catholic. suicide is a sin in the eyes of the church (but church and god are not necessarily the same thing). but again, true repentance of your sins before god will forgive all one's sins.

How do you plan to help?
It sounds as if a miracle is needed.
There are problems in this life that only God can take care of.
Try asking Jesus to help them, if you really want to help.
