I'm trying to build a wooden coat tree for my entry. All I want is a simple design, no carved wood or anything, with some dowels as the actual "hands" or whatever they are called. Maybe 6-8ft tall, with a + for a base. Really simple. I've looked online for plans, but can't seem to find any. And I can't actually do something like this from scratch - I really do need to at least be told what screws/nuts/bolts/plates to buy, so that this thing doesn't fall apart my first time out. Can anyone give me instructions or a link? Thanks.

I guess I didn't make myself clear enough - the kind I'm looking for doesn't attach to the wall - it's freestanding. I found one on http://www.target.com, but I really don't like the idea of spending $35 of my really tight budget for something that may not even be sturdy, based on the reviews. Oh well. Anyways, thanks for all the answers so far.

Dear lovinlife, haven't you heard about 'The Salvation Army" and other thrift shops? For a bout $5 or $10 dollars you can get some real beauties already made. If you want to add your own touch you can do so by painting them or wallpapering them or any creative way you can come up with to your liking.

You can study one of these and then build your own next time you feel like it.

easier to buy one if you have nevr made anything before.
sounds like you dont know what your doing and yur gonna have to use tools.
You could use a pre made base like that for an umbrella stand
insert a wooden pole like that of a wooden curtain hanging rod and screw in the premade coat hooks.

the kind your referring to are really cheap and though not real stable, do the job. You can always go to the store and take a display apart to see if you'd want to duplicate it.
If you can't go with a few hooks on a board, I'd just buy one.
