The soul is a personification of an individual consciousness. It is not a real thing. People have a hard time reconciling their mind and thoughts with their body. It is easy to picture the body as a vessel for this wonderful human intelligence that we have. However through observation and study it seems that the soul has been dismissed as a misconception of human consciousness.
If our soul is us it should not be able to change... There are cases where people who have suffered certain types of brain damage have demonstrated complete personality changes. If personality is a function of the soul then how could a damage of the body effect such a change?
Additionally there have been studies that disprove NDEs as well. Something as simple as placing an object in the room and seeing if it is described by the person having the experience... it never is.

The soul is the sum of your experience of life, it's your personality and your genitics. babies are all different personalities; some are quiet in nature, some loud, some daring and some naturally comical. These basic character traits , with a good upbringing would probably be the foundation of their growing personalities. Genetics would argue that these traits are inherited from the family line. My Mother told me I had several traits like my Great Grandfather who died before I was born. I do not read anything mystical in this, just genitics at work. As you age your personality grows, you see the world differently you become more experienced and experience more. As you say soul is an ancient word but a fitting, expressive word that seems about right to house my holy trinity. Personality, Genetics and Experience.

I feel that the soul is nothing more than an energy field that surrounds, as well as penetrates, a person's body and all things. Energy is a lot like air, you can't see it but you know it's there. It is, to me, the very breath of life that enables the body that is "housing" it to do work, to feel emotions, to love, etc.
For example, when you see someone jogging, they're using energy to do so (legs in motion, that kind of thing). You can see the "equipment" that energy utilizes to "get a job done" but you can't see the actual energy.. only what it's causing to happen with the runner's body. I can only hope that I conveyed that in a manner that makes sense. lol
Another example would be if you loved someone in the proverbial manner of "heart and soul", whereas you feel such a non-physical connection with someone that you literally feel connected to that person. They're a part of you and vice versa. I feel that's where the term "soulmate" comes in, whether it's a friendship type love or romantic. You feel completed when they're around. This is purely my opinion.. take it however you like.

The idea of the soul was made up by ancient philosophers who were trying to work out what happened when you died. A group of them decided that the idea that everyone has a "soul" which departs the body upon death, sounded like the best idea and they stuck with it.
I wish religious people would just see the facts and realise that there faith is a fallacy.

A lot of people misunderstand what the soul is, because of the lie the Devil told Eve. He said that if she ate from the Tree of Knowledge she would not die as God said. She obviously did die, but the belief is that her soul lives on and the same fate will also happen with us.
The soul is all of us, our body, mind and thoughts.
Joshua 11:11 (King James Version)
And they smote all the souls that were therein with the edge of the sword, utterly destroying them: there was not any left to breathe: and he burnt Hazor with fire.

Yes the soul is a myth based on the belief of eternalism (eternal existence - another myth).
It seems to make people happy to believe in myths, and these myths are fundamentally less harmful than a lot of other things.

The soul is the real you. Can it be proven? Yes if you believe the Word of God. If you don't believe that the Lord Jesus Christ died for your sins then it does not matter for you soul will go to hell. The scripture tells us that we are made up of three parts. Body, Soul, and Spirit. When God made Adam, He made the body from the dust of the ground, He breathed into him the breath of life (spirit) and he became a living soul. Genesis 2: 7 And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul. 1 Thessalonians 5: 23 And the very God of peace sanctify you wholly; and I pray God your whole spirit and soul and body be preserved blameless unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Loch Ness monster is a myth. Hard to prove. But I never been there.
But soul, thats something very close to me. It seems like a myth. But on second thoughts it does not. My main doubts start when I think about death. It is hard to believe that the world exists beyond "me". This is probably the "aatma" concept in Hinduism as well.

Yes. It is a myth. In order for the soul to attach itself to the body, it must have some form of corporeal existence, which it cannot have.

Dear friend, you are the soul...let me explain....this body is just a vehicle or a cloak. just as a vehicle or cloak once it serves its purpose it passes on. but the soul lives...Your breath (prana or life force) is the vital link to this body. So long as you are able to perform your part in dharma in the drama of eternity using this body during its term that is what that matters. the bible says "know ye not that you are the temple of the holy spirit"... and many other scriptures advocate the same too. seek and you shall find....in eternal friendship
